FromSoftware Inc., the developer of the Elden Ring, is popular for its tradition of punishing beauty. The same tradition continues in the mysterious, open, brutal, and magnificently designed. The game takes the challenging combat of Dark Souls and adds a sweeping, open-world setting. Then, it gives players a sense of freedom that is often missing in Soulslike Games. I’ve been playing through Final Fantasy 6 again, this time on the Vita after sideloading it from my PS3. It’s still a great game, but I won’t start the whole FF6 vs. FF7 argument. You can believe whichever Final Fantasy game is the best. Instead, I’m going to explain exactly how a character from FF6 is unquestionably the most badass character from all of Final Fantasy. Yes, more badass than Cloud, or Sephiroth, or Barrett, or Auron. I’m talking about Sabin Rene Figaro, prince of Figaro and brother of Edgar Roni Figaro. I’m going to make some bold declarations. I’m going to name some perfect games, and you’re probably going to flame me.

There is such a thing as a perfect video game, and your favorite games probably don’t fall under that category. Most of mine certainly don’t. There is such a thing as a perfect game, though, and it’s possible to identify them.

A perfect game is a game that produces an excellent, engaging gaming experience while doing exactly what it sets out to do as a game without overcoming technical limitations or compromising the experience as a result of those limitations or making major missteps we’re forced to overlook. A perfect game is a game that’s meticulously designed and gives players a great experience thanks to that design.

I can name many, many great games, but the vast majority of them are inherently flawed. This doesn’t make them bad, it just means you have to get past their flaws to enjoy them. Sometimes, those flaws actually enhance the game unintentionally, making it enjoyable in a way the developers didn’t intend. They’re great games, but they’re not perfect.

Anyone who ever played Resident Evil in their earliest iterations remembers how crucial it was to manage the right inventory, as well as the ammunition. There is some good news for old school players: the struggling intensity to make every bullet count is still here. Resident Evil 2 still feels and play like a real survival horror story.
